The Small Stone

Is any ripple of water greater than another? Even a small stone makes a swell in the water It is not I that should ponder its rings and route But thank God that the stone has been cast out. - CKSharpe

                         Absent-Minded Abby's Squirrelly Adventure

"I love twirling around in the dry, crunchy leaves. It's so much fun," said Abby.

She clasped her paws behind her head and twirled. She looked at the blue sky. It was going in circles, too.

"Playing is my favorite thing to do!" Abby laughed and wiggled around in the red, gold, and orange leaves.

Her forest friends called her absent-minded Abby for good reason. Today, Abby and her best friend, Lilly, gathered nuts for winter. But soon, sidetracked by a pile of colorful leaves, Abby left Lilly alone to gather nuts.

Who forgot she had things to do? Absent-minded Abby, that's who!

Abby's friend Lilly drew in a long breath and crossed her arms. "You better store food while you can. The ground will be frozen soon and covered by snow. You won't be able to find food."

"I will gather nuts later," Abby said. "I won't forget."

"The only thing you won't forget to do is play," said Lilly. Her friend laughed and continued to gather nuts.

Abby shivered as a cold breeze blew her fur. Lilly was right. Now was the time to gather food and find a place to build her winter nest. "But I'm not worried," she muttered to herself. "My friends share their food if I don't store enough for the winter."

Abby looked at Lilly. "Tomorrow," she said. "I will gather nuts and look for a winter home." She closed her eyes and continued to daydream.

Who forgot she had things to do? Absent-minded Abby, that's who!
