The Small Stone

Is any ripple of water greater than another? Even a small stone makes a swell in the water It is not I that should ponder its rings and route But thank God that the stone has been cast out. - CKSharpe

“It’s time to eat chocolate.”

Millie, the house mouse, lived in The Chocolate Box candy shop. She rubbed her hungry tummy. It fussed louder than the rain falling on the shop’s roof. She ran from her nest in a locked back room behind a locked back room. She peeked into the shopping area.

Mr. and Mrs. Lee owned the chocolate shop. They locked the shop’s door every evening and went upstairs to their apartment. Millie ran all over the shop after closing time. Even then, she was careful. She didn’t want them to see her running around.

Millie ran to the candy display. She climbed the wooden case and stopped at her usual spot. She licked her lips.

“Chocolate,” she squeaked. “Oh, for the love of chocolate!”

“The trays of goodies look so yummy!” She jumped. “We-e-e.”

Ump-ff. Millie landed on the candy shelf with a mouse-sized thud. She popped a piece of creamy goodness into her mouth. She was careful to only eat chocolate pieces. She didn’t want to be found out... or get kicked out.

A flash of lightning lit the candy shop. Millie saw something moving.

“What is lying on the floor?” said Millie.

“Help me!” said a field mouse.

Millie popped another piece of chocolate in her mouth. She stared at the wet mouse laying on the floor.
